I just had 3 amazing long weekends in a row.
[No, no one is really expected to read this, I'm mostly just doing this to document my weekends and not forget]
Long Weekend #1
We had a Spanish Lit project with partners, so Ingrid and I chose to be together. A couple of days before the weekend, Ingrid's parents tell her they're going to spend the long weekend at Santa Maria del Oro with sme family. By then, we still hadn't done nearly enough, and it was completely necessary that we worked on it over the weekend, so we had two choices: either Ingrid stayed here, or I went with them. We ended up doing the second, and I couldn't have made a better decision. Santa Maria del Oro is a small town a couple od hours from Vallarta, close to which Ingrid's uncle has a nice little cabin. The cabin is right next to a beautiful small crater lake (1 mile wide). There are a few restaurants and small cabin hotels, and some private houses and cabins scattered around the lake. There are no shops, hardly any signal, no home-phone, no internet, it's like a little paradaise you can just escape to and disconnect from the rest of the world. The cabin is right on the lake, with huge pieces of land surrounding it that her uncle bought so he wouldn't have any neighbors, a few other smaller cabins for when they have lots of visits, a pretty little dock, and a large outdoor area with tables, a grill, and a bar. The cabin is nice and spacious (there were about 15 of us sleeping in the main one); wooden and obviously a hunter's cabin.
We left Vallarta Friday after school and it was dark by the time we arrived there (it gets dark very early, at about 5 or 6, because of the time change between states and because it's surrounded by mountains that shade it). I got introduced to everyone and we just had some chili dogs and hung around until it was time to sleep. I can be a little shy when I meet people, so I was pretty quiet at first, or at least that night, and just sat there and listened. I loved all of Ingrid's family. First there's her uncle, a really nice and welcoming guy. Then there's her aunt Monica, "es una botana". Her cousins (from oldest to youngest): Monica (21), who's just stunning + her friend Marylin, who I actually got to get to know quite well, Paola (19), really nice girl, Rafael (18), really sporty + his friend Pedro, really funny guy, and finally, Paty (14), really sweet bubbly girl. And there were a few other guests, Alex (16), his little brother Diego, the cutes kid on Earth, their parents, and another older (twenty-something) Diego. There was one point in the conversation where she was talking to Pedro and scolding him for spending ridiculous amounts of money on a girl, and he was like "Perdi el control, pero nunca el estilo" (I might have lost control, but I never lost my style. Doesn't sound right in English), Ingrid and I instantly liked him, and I doubt either of us will ever forget his little catch phrase, specially Ingrid.
My first oficial day in Santa Maria del Oro, I slep in. By the time I woke up, around 10, most of the girls and guys had been gone for hours and both of the boats were gone, the girls had taken the red one for slalom, and the guys the blue one for wakeboarding. Ingrid and I finished up the written part of our project, which we had already been working on in class, and Paty slept for a few hours more. The girls came back around the time we were done and Paty had woken up. The next part of our project was to present Becquer's story in a creative and understandable way to the class, and since the story we had chosen (before knowing we were coming to Santa Maria del Oro), "Los Ojos Verdes", was about hunters and was set next to a lake, it was perfect. We dressed up in Ingrid's uncle's hunting clothes and went to an area with lots of trees to film the first part where we wer out hunting, Paty was an extra, and Paola filmed it. For the second part, which was basically talking, we filmed it in the living room of the cabin, walls adorned with disected deers and wild cats. The third part is near the lake, where Fernando (me) finds the beautiful spirit/demon standing next to the lake, confesses her love to her and falls into the lake, we filmed on the dock next to the lake, and Monica, beautiful, blonde, and perfect for the role, was our water spirit. For the finale, I had to fall into the lake in my clothes, it was actually kind of fun. Our video turned out great (We got a 10, and all the guys in our class were drooling over Moni). After we were done with the video, all the girls and Diegito got in the jacuzzi and we just talked for a while. When the guys came back to eat something quick before going back out on the boat, we got on and joined them. It was going to get dark soon, so only two people wakeboarded this time, Pedro and Rafael. The rest of us just sat on the back of the boat and watched while talking and enjoying the ride around the lake. I was blown away by how amazingly good Rafael was. He glided effortlessly on top of the water, going from side to side and jumping across the wake with ease, adding a flip or two every once in a while. Torwards the end, a bit before going back, Marylin gave it a try, but didn't have very good luck. She tried to stand up a few times but couldn't, it was getting kind of dark and choppy, so she decided she would just try again another day. We got back to the house and had "birria de venado" which was delicious, then we all went inside and just sat in the living room talking. First it was just, Ingrid, Rafael, and me, and he was just telling me some fun stories of when Ingrid was younger, I learnt quite a few things I didn't know. Then Pedro and Richi came and we started just talking about schools, and friends, and parties. Then came Moni, Marylin, Paola, Ingrid's aunt, Ingrid's parents, and very soon, everyone was sitting on a couch, seat, stair, floor, or some other type of surface and we had covered every single kind of topic that has ever existed. They shared childhood stories, talked about funny, silly, and scary things, most comments and stories accompanied by acting out what they were saying. Relationships, "el chupacabras", hunting, no topic escaped them, as I just kind of sat back and listened to all of this, perfectly amused. Little by little, people started leaving to their own rooms, to watch some TV and get ready to sleep. Ingrid and I joined Paty back at the room and we watched King Fu Panda before going to bed.
Sunday morning followed a pretty similar pattern. Sleep in until 10, have some breakfast, work on some homework (Ingrid did Biology and I did Psychology). After doing that we changed the jacuzzi chatting time for some kayak time. I simply loved kayaking in the lake, it's about a thousand times better than kayaking in the ocea, no waves, no wind no currents. You hardly even had to put any effort into it, you just glided effortlessly on the calm water. We went all the way to the cabin hotel, where we tied our kayacs to the dock and Ingrid and I took a small break while Paty went to say hi to a friend that was staying there. On our way back, two slightly older guys started following us on their own kayaks and yelling things at us about wanting to be our friends or something along those lines. I have to admit I had never been stalked on kayaks, it was pretty amusing. When we got back to the house, they were just waiting for us before leaving on the boat again. Some people wakeboarded, including Pedro, Rafael, who once again jumped and flipped and did all kinds of amazing tricks while making it look like the easiest thing in the world, and Paola, who was also really good. There were lots of boats in the lake, and although it looked perfectly calm to me, the experts said it was too choppy to even bother to try to wakeboard some more. So Rafael and Pedro tied some handles close behind the boat, and decided to be dragged by the boat and practically drown themselves in its wake, seeing who held on the longest. Then they added another person, Paola, and they both shared one handle while she took the other one. More and more people started doing it, taking turns in pairs. Richi was undoubtedly the best, he held on firmly to to the handle no matter how sharply or how many times Rafael turned the boat in all directions. Ingrid tried it once, but didn't last long since it's not the best idea to do that when you've got easy to untie bikini bottoms, so she preffered to let go of the handle than loose her bikini.
